Sited to take full advantage of spectacular views of the Ortiz, Jemez, and Sangre de Cristo Mountains, this modern rammed earth home - with a connected garage and guest house - sits just steps from a private, canyon-like arroyo framed by dramatic rock outcroppings and shaded trails. During construction, the home's thick earthen walls were built layer by layer, with each lift infused with earth-tone pigments carefully selected to echo the surrounding landscape and the often-dramatic colors of the morning and evening skies. The open-plan kitchen, dining, and living spaces are anchored by a massive, rammed earth volume featuring a sculptural, shepherd-style rammed earth fireplace. Expansive glazing extends east and west from this central volume, bookending the space with sweeping views and connecting the interiors to covered outdoor living and dining areas through large sliding glass doors.
